Psilocybin therapy has a number of benefits, but scientists are asking not to rush to conclusions until all the risks are fully studied.
Interest in psychedelic therapy is growing due to its potential to treat various psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, according to a new study by a group of scientists from Stockholm University and the University of Iceland, along with the benefits in this area, there are also major risks, writes PsyPost.
Psilocybin is a psychedelic substance produced by more than 200 species of mushrooms, known as "magic mushrooms." When ingested, psilocybin is converted to psilocin, which primarily affects serotonin receptors in the brain, which leads to changes in perception, emotions, and thoughts; a person may experience a sense of transcendental experiences, as well as hallucinations.
Psilocybin therapy combines the controlled use of psilocybin with psychotherapy sessions.
Previous studies have shown that psilocybin is generally safe physiologically and may have mental health benefits. But the new study sheds more light on the other side of the issue.
